Day One - Arrival Day

You're likely to arrive mid to late afternoon. If arriving from the US, it was a long journey with a connection because there are currently no direct flights to Zagreb. Take it easy this afternoon.

    Hotel Check In

    Check into hotel and freshen up. If arriving prior to check in, have the hotel keep your bags behind the desk while you venture out.

  2. 02

    Neighborhood Walk

    Allow 1 to 2 hours

    Stroll the streets around your hotel in the Lower Town. Walk from King Tomislav Square through the green spaces to Zrinjevac Park. If you're here near the holidays, this whole area will be a massive Christmas Market with skating rink.

    Dinner in the Lower Town

    We ate at Byblos our first night and I highly recommend it.

Day Two - Medieval Upper Town

Explore Zagreb's historic Upper Town today.

    Zagreb Funicular

    Great Photo Opportunity at Top

    You'll buy tickets in the station.

    Ride the funicular from the Lower Town to the Upper Town.

  2. 02

    Lotrscak Tower & Gric Cannon

    Allow about 1 hour

    Arrive before noon.

    If you plan to arrive here just before noon, you will experience the daily firing of the Gric Cannon. Afterwards, you can walk the stairs inside the tower all the way to the top floor viewing platform.

    St. Mark's Square & St. Mark's Church

    Admire and take photos of this famous church and surrounding medieval square.

    Stone Gate

    Pass Through

    Wonderful shrine to the Virgin Mary inside the old city's gate.

    Lunch in Upper Town

    Wander along Tkalčićeva Street, one of the Upper Town's popular pedestrian areas to find lunch.

    Dolac Market

    Pass Through

    Zagreb's popular local farmers market.

    Ban Jelačić Square

    End your afternoon in Zagreb's most popular public square. See street performers. People watch. Grab a coffee. If you're here near the holidays like I was, there will be a large Christmas market to enjoy.

Day Three - Day Trip to Slovenia

We booked a group tour that picked us up and returned us to our hotel. This is a whole day trip with one to two hours of driving each way. You'll return to your hotel around dinner time.

    Ljubljana

    About 2 to 3 hours

    Book ahead.

    Our first tour stop was Slovenia's capital, Ljubljana.

    • Funicular up to Ljubljana Castle
    • Wander the streets and shops next to the Ljubljanica River
    • Dragon Bridge
    • Franciscan Church of the Annunciation

    Bled Castle

    About 1 hour

    Experience the incredible views of Bled Lake from above. Take tons of pictures. Stop in the cafe for a slice of the famous Bled Cream Cake.

    Bled Lake

    Allow about 1 hour

    Walk the trails of Bled Lake. Take in the views of Bled Castle from below. If you're here around the holidays, there will be a small but lively Christmas market right on the banks of the lake.

Day Four - More Zagreb Attractions & a Museum

Visit more sites around Zagreb.

    Gric Tunnel

    Allow about 30 minutes

    Walk through this former WWII bomb shelter from one side of the city to the other. During the holidays, the tunnel is festively decorated.

    Allow about 30 minutes

    Visit a Museum

    Allow 2 hours

    A popular museum is the quirky Museum of Broken Relationships. There are also several others to choose from depending on your interests:

    • Nikola Tesla Technical Museum
    • Museum of Contemporary Art
    • Zagreb City Museum
    • Museum of Illusions

Day Five - Visit Samobor

Slow day featuring small town Croatia.

    Slow morning with breakfast and coffee

    After several very busy days, today is slower. Find breakfast near your hotel. Linger over coffee and relax a bit.

    Samobor

    Allow 3 hours

    Around lunch time, head to Samobor, about 20 minutes by car (we took Uber) from Zagreb.

    Samobor is a small, picturesque town outside of Zagreb.

    • Walk the trails along Gradna Creek
    • Church of Saint Anastazia
    • See the ruins of Samobor Castle from below
    • Rest, shop, get coffee, the famous cream cake "Kremsnita", or a late lunch in King Tomislav Square

    Dinner in the Lower Town

    Suggested restaurants:

    • Zinfandel's (Michelin recommended, inside Esplanade Hotel)
    • Boban (Croatian)

Day Six - Plitvice Lakes National Park

Day Trip to Plitvice Lakes & Rastoke. Book a group tour that will pick up and drop off at your hotel. This will be a full day trip. You'll return to your hotel around dinner time.

    Plitvice Lakes National Park

    Approx 4 to 5 hours

    Book ahead

    Hike the trails and admire the extraordinary and unforgettable lakes and waterfalls of the park. Wear good sneakers or hiking shoes.

  2. 02

    Lunch in the park

    Have a casual lunch at one of the park's quick service restaurants. We had burgers and hot dogs with a view!

  3. 03

    Visit Rastoke

    About 1 hour

    On the way back from Plitvice Lakes, stop in the historic mill town of Rastoke. The tiny village features over 23 waterfalls and wooden water mills dating back to the 17th century.

Day Seven - Shopping & Relaxing in the Lower Town

Final, farewell day in Zagreb.

    Shop along Ilica

    Allow as long as you'd like

    Shop along Zagreb's main modern shopping street. Don't forget to pick up some souvenirs!

  2. 02

    Lunch in the Lower Town

    Grab lunch in one of the Lower Town's many cafes and restaurants. Try cevapi or Croatian style wood fired pizza.

  3. 03

    Ban Jelacic Square

    Stop off one last time in Ban Jelacic Square.

Getting Around

Zagreb is very walkable but also has an above ground tram system for longer treks across the city. Uber and taxis are available. For day trips outside of the city, we booked tours with transportation included.
